Purgatory Creek is one of the most popular natural areas in San Marcos, Tx. There are a vast majority of activities to participate. There are a numerous amount of miles in hiking trails which should give you countless hours of hiking and/or trail biking. Located not too far from the entrance trail, you will find a huge pit and wall of rocks. Occasionally you will also see a few college students sitting at the end of a tunnel that runs through the Rockwall and is elevated above the pit.

In order to access the tunnel you need to find the correct parking area for the park, due to the vastness of the Purgatory Creek, there are several different parking entrances. The entrance that is required is found off the intersection of Hunter Road and Wonder World Drive. Once parked follow the entrance trail straight until you find the big rock wall. Once you find the wall of rocks continue the trail until you arrive at the other side of the rocks. You now will find a big concrete drain-looking-concrete structure. There will be a tiny hole that you climb through, once climbed through you can walk through the tunnel and enjoy the scenic view.

The tunnel, which is enjoyed by many around the community and at the university, isn’t the only highlight of the natural area. Pictured above you can see areas in the park grounds where there are open fields to play sports or enjoy a picnic. Personally, my girlfriend and I love bringing a speaker to play music and practice our country-swing dances. There are tons of wildlife, in fact, I have seen deer at the park every time I have visited. With all the variety of things the park offers, it isn’t the only park in San Marcos.
